Overwatch

In this week's post, I'm going to be looking at a game which is probably my current favourite - Overwatch. Overwatch is an online team-based first-person shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows, it was hugely successful and is still incredibly popular today. Players choose one of twenty seven 'heroes' from four categories (Offense, defence, tank or support) to play on a team of six. Objectives include capturing map objectives, escorting payloads and accomplishing a specific number of eliminations. I love Overwatch  because there is almost definitely a character, map or objective to suit every player.

Unlike my other posts, today I will not be looking at the locations shown within Overwatch alone, though I could easily do this, considering Overwatch's expansive range of global maps. Instead, I will be choosing some of my favourite characters to play and writing about them, as Overwatch has an incredibly diverse range of heroes from all corners of the world.

Firstly, I will be looking at D.va as she was the first Overwatch character I ever played. Hana Song, known in game as D.va, is a nineteen year old former pro-gamer who began using her gaming talents to pilot a mech when her home country of South Korea called upon her. A huge robot with incredible AI (known throughout Overwatch as an 'omnic') rose up out of the East China Sea, devastating South Korea's coastal cities and in response the government developed a unit of mechs to combat it. It quickly became apparent that the mechs required human assistance to properly fight the omnic and the nations pro-gamers were instantly turned to, including the world champion - Hana Song.

Next, I will be writing about Moira O'Deorain because she is Overwatch's only Irish character. I really enjoy playing Moira as she is a support hero but is also very suited to combat, making her an all-round great and easy-to-play character. Moira is a geneticist with unorthodox and controversial methods for improving combat performances. After publishing a paper describing a process in which DNA is altered at a cellular level to maximise human potential, Moira came under fire from her fellow geneticists due to her loose moral compass during her studies. Her peers also failed to imitate Moira's discoveries, leading to further suspicions about her methods.

As her career crumbled around her, Moira was more than happy to accept assistance from Overwatch, an association vowed to protecting the world, which offered her a position. Her place within Overwatch was kept secret from the public and when the association disbanded, she was forced to find other sources of funding. She turned to a terrorist group called Talon, who she offered her intelligence and creations to in exchange for the funds to continue her research.

The next character I will be looking at is Sombra, who's real name is unknown. As one of the best hackers in the world, Sombra understands the importance of information and often uses it to abuse and manipulate others. Taken in as a young girl by Mexico's Los Muertos gang, she assisted it in rebelling against the Mexican government who Los Muertos believed to favour the wealthy. The world quickly noticed her as incredibly competent when she happened across a global conspiracy and she was forced to disappear, deleting any traces of her existence. When she re-entered the world under the alias of Sombra, more trained and more determined to uncover the truth, she was quickly claimed by Talon and has been working with the organisation ever since.

That's all that I have time to look at today, I hope you can see from this small sample the elaborate story behind each and every Overwatch character. Keep in mind there are twenty four more characters with equally detailed lives and I think this is what makes Overwatch so special - there is at least one character who's play style and aesthetic will appeal to every one of over forty million players. I would definitely recommend that you give you give the game a try and see which character suits you.
